Hunger Banquet
How Does It Work?
- Gather a group of people - this could be done with a school group, church group, or a group of your family and friends!
- Divide up your group into three hunger categories. 20% will be wealthy, 30% will be middle class, and 50% will be poor. These percentages mirror global hunger statistics.
- The very rich will enjoy a meal that most Americans would consider standard: meat, vegetables, side dishes, and a drink. They will eat at a table with chairs, possibly with decorations.
- The middle class would receive a bowl of rice with beans and water. They will eat at a table and chairs with nothing extra.
- The poorest group may sit on the floor and share a pot of rice between them.
Time for Reflection
Make sure to include time for the group to process the experience:
- How did it feel to be in each of these groups?
- What did you notice about the other groups? Did you want to help or ask for help?
- Do you think it is fair that the world is divided in this way?
A hunger banquet is an experiential dinner where guests take on the role of people around the world: some who are well-fed, others who are working middle class, and others who live in poverty.
Take Action
This experience will certainly lead to many thoughts and feelings. Make sure to process the experience, and share actionable steps to feed hungry children and support Mary’s Meals.
- You can find details about the work of Mary’s Meals by clicking here or researching world wide hunger statistics online.
- Our films such as Child 31, Generation Hope and Love Reaches Everywhere tell incredible stories of hope and help us see what happens when those who have, share with those who do not.
- Consider taking up a collection or charging an entry fee that can go towards feeding a child for an entire school year.
- Bonus: See the “Collecting Donations” resource on what to do with donations and how to connect your dinner guests with Mary’s Meals USA.
